It was a record setting summer
for the Marlins Of Raleigh-Wolfpack Aquatic Club swimmers. As
a team MOR had the following accomplishments:
This has been a most exceptional
year for MOR. Breaking 13 State Records was fabulous and having
1 swimmer and 1 relay ranked 1st in the nation was also a big accomplishment.
It shows what can happen when swimmers work hard, coaches provide
caring guidance and motivation, and parents believe in the dreams
of their swimmers. With the tremendous excitement of Michael
Phelps and the Olympics, our swimmers truly came through with some
record setting performances of their own. We've never set
more than 4 state records in one year so to have 13 this year is
superb!" said MOR head coach Paul Silver.

KIRSTEN SMITHONLY NC SWIMMER TO SCORE IN
Cary, NC: Kirsten
Smith of the Marlins Of Raleigh (MOR) was the only swimmer from
North Carolina to score in the Swimming World Magazine National High
School Championships. Swimming World released the results in its
Sept. issue and has published the rankings every year for the past
40 years.
Smith, a 2008 graduate of Athens
Drive High School and Cary resident, finished 8th in the 200 IM with
a time of 2:00.58. The time was swum at the NCHSAA 4A State Swim
Meet held in February. Points are awarded for 1st through 16th
place. No other swimmer from NC placed in the top 16 in any
individual or relay event. Smith was also named an all-American in
the 500 free where she finished 51st in the country with a time of
4:55.87 swum at the NCHSAA 4A State Meet also.
Smith is now a freshman at the
University of Florida and is the North Carolina Swimming record
holder in multiple events. Smith advanced to the semifinals of the
200 IM at the 2008 US Olympic Trials. Additionally, she went
undefeated at High School State Championship meets all 4 years in
the 200 IM and 500 Free while at Athens.
"The time really shows how talented
Kirsten is as she competed at the State Meet unrested and unshaved
as we prepared her for the US Olympic Trials. It's nice to see her
hard work pay off with this special recognition." said MOR head
coach Paul Silver.
Other Raleigh Swimmers who were
named by All-Americans by swimming under the AA qualifying time by
Swimming World Magazine include MOR's Gabi Shishkoff in the 500 Free
(4:59.95). Gabi is currently a Jr. at Enloe HS.

ATTEND US OLYMPIC TRAINING CENTER ALTITUDE
Colorado Springs, Colorado:
While many Wake County youths took last week off, 5 Marlins Of Raleigh
swimmers attended an altitude training camp at the US Olympic Training
Center (OTC) in Colorado Springs, Co. Mar. 31-April 6, courtesy of USA
Swimming. USA Swimming paid for all room, training fees, and food for
the swimmers and Coach Paul Silver since the swimmers had all achieved
the specified funding qualifying times. The only cost was the plane
fare. The swimmers who attended were Taylor Harris (Broughton), Kirsten
Smith (Athens), Erika Stewart (Jordan High), Elizabeth Oliver (East
Wake), and Victoria Mitchell (Cary HS).
The goals of the camp were to train Long
Course at 5500 feet of altitude, get educational seminars from USA
Swimming's Sports Science team, underwater video analysis, blood lactate
analysis and of course fun. USA Swimming has a limited # of camps
available for teams that qualify throughout the year and usually
about 20 teams take are approved to have camps each year. MOR, a Silver
Medal Club, took advantage of the school break to attend while space was
available at the OTC. While at the OTC, MOR swimmers trained alongside
the US National Open water team, as well as Texas world record holders
Brendan Hansen and Aaron Piersol.
USA Swimming provided the following
services to MOR:
There were 11 swimming workouts, 2
weight workouts and 3 dry land workouts that the swimmers participated
in completing over 70,000 meters during the week. The first practice
had the swimmers gasping for breath but they gradually adapted to the
altitude and the workouts slowly increased in intensity as the week went
on.
It wasn't just all swimming though for
the MOR athletes. There was a trip to the movies as well as a day trip
13,000 feet up Pikes Peak into the snow and well above the tree line and
the clouds. A tour of the Cave of the Winds followed and a hike through
the majestic Garden of the Gods. The day culminated in pizza in
downtown Colorado Springs.
"I feel we accomplished many goals on
this trip including increasing our athlete's awareness of the importance
of technique and nutrition. I got to know each of them in a small group
environment and this will aid us as we strive together to achieve higher
goals for all." said MOR head coach Paul Silver.
"It was a good challenge learning how to
adapt to the training at high altitude." said MOR senior, Erika
Stewart.
"It made me understand and respect the
sport of swimming to a much higher level." said MOR junior Taylor
Harris.
"I learned how can improve my recovery
between workouts by eating a healthier diet." said MOR junior Elizabeth
Oliver.
"There is a lot more to swimming than
just training including the mental and nutritional side. It was
valuable to hear input about my swimming from National Team Head Coach
Mark Schubert and technique corrections from staff member George
Heidinger." said MOR US National Jr. Team member Kirsten Smith.
"I
loved getting my ear pricked to draw blood for the lactate testing.
The test results showed how quickly I recovered from training and
that I'm in good shape." said MOR freshman Victoria Mitchell. MOR finished
2nd at NC 14-Under Age Group State Championships
Team Scores were as follows:
Last year Mac won with a similar score
of 2997. However, MOR finished 2nd a year ago with only 1455 so MOR
tallied 546 more points this year as a team and with only 45% of the # o
f swimmers entered in the meet that Mac had.
3 Swimmers won events for MOR
were Caroline Mitchell (200/400 IM), Emily Nordstrom (100 Breast), and
Tyler Silver (50 Free*, 100 Free*, 200 Free, 400 Free, 50 Back, 100
Back, 50 Fly, 100 Fly*, 200 IM) *=state record
14 Swimmers placed in the top 8:Cameron
Brown, Collier Cobb, Will Countie, Matt Duggins, Matt Hurley, Scott
Johnson, Casey Lawton, Kelsey Lawton, Emily Martin, Ben Miller, Ryley
Miller, Justin Ress, Jacalyn Schoening, and Lillie Smith.
9 Swimmers scored in the Top 16: Carlie
Brown, Sarah Comstock, Steven Craig, Emily Duff, Meagan Johnson, Adam
Linker, Dominque Quintero, Jacqi Rocque, and Brennan Textor.
MOR's 10-Under boys smashed 2 state
relay records. The relay of Will Countie, Justin Ress, Tyler Silver,
and Collier Cobb swam a 2:23.02 in the 200 Medley Relay and 2:07.32 in
the 200 Free Relay easily passing the previous state records of GSA
(1998) 2:25.52 and Wave (1998) 2:09.64. MOR also won 11-12 Girls 400
Medley Relay (Kelsey Lawton, Emily Martin, Cameron Brown, and Carlie
Brown) Additionally, Silver tied the State record in the 100 Free
1:04.93 (previous 1:04.93 from 1988) and broke state records in the 50
Free (previous 29.46 1988) and 100 Fly (previous 1:11.75 2008).
"It was a great weekend that saw over 1/2 our swimmers contribute individual points and saw an astounding 47 out of our 50 swimmers contribute points either individually or on relays. The swimmers worked hard on improving their technique using underwater video and hard on their race skills with our Age Group Coaches. Our quality came through as well as we won 12 individual events and 3 relays. It was so much fun to see the swimmers efforts rewarded. This is our 2nd straight runner up finish as a team." said MOR head age group coach Billy Thorne.
